4SAKN Biography

4SAKN ONE, also known as Derek Rue, is a highly accomplished graffiti artist based in New Jersey. With an impressive career spanning over two decades he has left an indelible mark on the urban art scene. Born and raised in Central Jersey, Derek has called Jersey City home for the past 17 years, a city that has not only inspired him but also serves as the backdrop for most of his art.

As a self-taught artist, Derek's journey into graffiti began with painting train line underpasses, abandoned buildings, and highways. These unconventional canvases allowed him to experiment and refine his skills, developing a distinct style that would set him apart. His passion and dedication soon caught the attention of art enthusiasts across the United States, leading him to paint in various cities, with Los Angeles being a notable highlight. During his time in LA, Derek was recruited to be a member of one of the most renowned graffiti crews CBS, “Cant Be Stopped Crew”.

Derek's artistic prowess extends beyond the streets, as he has showcased his work in prestigious museums such as The Morris Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate. He has participated in numerous group shows and exhibitions, most recently The Cast Iron Loft Show. Known for his larger-than-life multi-colored graffiti pieces and wildstyles with strong letter structure, Derek continually pushes the boundaries of his craft. Each new piece he creates brings forth evolving letter styles in unexpected color palettes that never fail to captivate his audience. For Derek, the essence of graffiti lies in its ability to shock and awe viewers with its massive size and intricate details.

Over the years, Derek has seamlessly merged his graffiti roots with more recognizable images, developing a unique style of canvas painting. This blending of elements allows him to infuse his work with a sense of familiarity while maintaining the raw energy and impact of graffiti.

In recent years, Derek has diversified his artistic pursuits, exploring various forms of art ranging from silk screening to laser cutting his own digital creations. He has ventured into the realm of interior design, curating both interior and exterior installations for retail stores and real estate developers. Most recently Derek played a leading role in curating the murals for Jersey City's first mural festival, a historic moment celebrating street and graffiti artists from across the US.

The thrill of creating new work and undertaking new projects is what continually motivates Derek to push his limits and stay active in the art world. His genuine love for the act of creation, rather than passive consumption, serves as a driving force in his artistic journey. Derek's ultimate goal is to forge ahead on the path he has paved for himself, consistently improving his artwork, whether it be through graffiti, sculpting, or canvas work. With each new endeavor, he strives to leave an enduring legacy as a visionary artist and a prominent figure in the ever-evolving art scene.
